Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the right to contest particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
